AdventureQuest 3D: Alpha Test Version 0.003

We conducted a test for our upcoming 3D, browser based fantasy game, AdventureQuest 3D: Legend of Lore. The goal of the test is to see if we fixed all of the major bugs from the previous test. The game uses the Artix Entertainment "One Login to Rule them All" (The same login as this web site, EpicDuel, Oversoul, HeroSmash, and Portal.BattleOn.com. To qualify as a tester (known as an AlphaKnight) you must either be an active upgrade member of AdventureQuest Worlds, or have supported us in one of our previous games. Follow this "play by play" for behind the scenes secrets, blunders, and craziness as the current test unfolds! Victory!

Alpha Test 0.003 was a great success! The server is now offline. Thank you again to everyone who helped us test over the past 24 hours. We found a lot of things to fix, and we have a lot of new features in the works! I will be posting the time for the next test as soon as possible. While you wait for the next test, be sure to check out the MCW Micro Championship Wrestling event happening in AdventureQuest Worlds Friday night! Battle on!

The Alpha Test is pretty stable! We are leaving the servers online so you have a change to get all three gems. Remember, each color Gem is worth 50 Alpha Points. (Max of 150 if you have them all) Good hunting, and see you in the Alpha!

Resetting game to normal room size (15 players per room.) We noticed that everyone's XP values fell back to the last save after the reboot -- this means the XP is not being saved regularly. We will fix this for the next test. The wall of monsters inside the cave are pretty difficult to pass, it is quite a challenge... the result is we have seen VERY FEW players who managed to get the Blinding Light of Destiny or the final Gem from that monster. Need to use strategy for this one!

We have a few more minutes to wait, so... story time!
So, we submitted applications to be on the American Ninja Warrior again this year. We have been training. I have been training A LOT lately. In addition to my normal martial arts classes, I have been learning how to wrestle from WWE legend Tanake and last night, Roam and I went to American Ninja Warrior champ Drew Dreschel's Parkour Gym in Gainsville, FL. He set up obstacles to simulate some of the things found on the course... doing them normally is hard enough. But I was trying to do it in my cosplay armor. Swinging across the gym on a rope and jump landing on small boxes, crossing a beam by swinging between a series of handgrips, jumping across 4 loosely positioned weights then onto a green table which you then jump way in the back on a small target, then jump up and do a wall climb around the back of the box. He had a lot of of really challenging things setup and while the pictures were carefully taken to not get other people in the photo, the place was packed. The people he trains with are capable of amazing physical feats -- I hope to be able to do just a fraction of the things they can.

PvP! We disabled world PvP to prevent the horrific massacre that would surely occur with the more stable version of the game. However, you can still PvP on a special map for all of you blood thirsty war mongers :-) Type /join PvPmap to go there once in game. We are just waiting for the files to finish spreading across the internet and then we can begin.

Blue Sky Bug: This is when your entire game turns sky blue. This bug was fixed so that players will not longer get it when logging in the game. However, we just discovered if you move your mouse around while you are dead it can cause you to Blue Sky Bug when you respawn. (Calling it Blue Sky instead of Blue Screen to avoid confusion with the term "Blue Screen" which is used to describe crashing your entire computer.)

We are fixing a few last minute bugs and getting the fixes uploaded to the CDN. While you wait:

  • Moved the button to this post for people who did not see it on the homepage.
  • For some reason, ALL of the Shoulders and Helms are backwards (LOL!)
  • DragonFable just posted design notes on their Lucky Day release this Friday!
  • Hulk Hogan's Micro Champsionship Wrestlers (from TruTV) are going to be stopping by the lab in a little bit on their way to their show in Orlando tonight. Ooooh! Do not forget -- if you are going to the MegaCon convention this weekend, I will be managing one of their wrestlers in a match at 2pm at the MCW ring. You guys should tell Chairman Platinum. Maybe he will show up... and I can lure him into the ring.

Today, in town you fill find Leona, the AlphaKnight Trainer. She wants you to find 3 gems hidden on monsters in this release: Red Gem, Blue Gem & the Green Gem. Your quest is to have one of each in your inventory by the end of the test... which we are going to run as late as possible for you all. After the test, Zhoom will run a query on the database and give you 50 Alpha Points for the Red one, 50 for the Green one, and 50 for the Blue one (worth 150 points if you have them all!)

11:30am We are currently uploading the current game test to our CDN (content delivery network.) We expect testing to begin before 12:30pm EST. The gray button at the upper right of the screen will change to red when the test is live.

The testing continues WEDNESDAY!

Thanks to all of our testers, we were able to find and fix an enormous amount of bugs including the monster bug, the pink screen bug, the blueish screen bug and more. This Wednesday, join us in putting these fixes to the test! Also, we are placing three item drops in the game. Each one will be worth 50 more Alpha Points. If this test is a success, we will be moving on to create quests & classes.

Happening in the next test

  • We are planning to start at noon, and run it until ~8 or 9pm EST. (subject to change)
  • Preview of "The Chapel"!!!
  • Items you found in the previous test have crumbled to dust and dissapeared. (Tis' the way of Alpha Testing!)
  • You will keep your earned Experience (XP)
  • Secret Item Drops (On monsters)
    • Red Gem (Find it and after the test ends it will reward you with 50 Alpha Points. Limit 1.)
    • Blue Gem (Find it and after the test ends it will reward you with 50 Alpha Points. Limit 1.)
    • Green Gem (Find it and after the test ends it will reward you with 50 Alpha Points. Limit 1.)
  • Player vs Player (PvP) will be enabled on a special map that you can join. It will be disabled on normal maps. 
  • Chat will be fixed (no more backspacing to break it)
  • "Fall back shaders" have been introduced. If your graphics card cannot handle the current graphics it will "fall back" to less pretty, more functional ones. (Pink screen bug)
  • Monster "breaking" has been fixed -- although there might be more problems to discover! (it is Alpha Testing after all!)
  • The main purpose of this test is stability. It is exciting because the things we are doing are new... but pales in comparison to the combat tests that will be coming in the following weeks. *literally on the edge of seat for elemental combat with multi class combo attacks!*

  • Report any glitch, problem, weirdness, or thing that makes you have to reload your browser to fix
  • Try to do things a brand new player would do. Pretend you are a noob :-)

AdventureQuest 3D: Legend of LORE

We conducted a stress test (version .002) for our new, browser-based, 3D, massively multiplayer game AdventureQuest 3D: Legend of LORE! The purpose of this test is to have 2,000+ testers (known as AlphaKnights) online, running around a small sample map and fighting a few monsters. Below are the results! Thank you to everyone who helped test -- even if you just opened up the page and crashed. You helped more than you could ever imagine! Below are the result of the test and what we are going to do to fix the bugs you found!

REMINDER: An Alpha Test is not a game, it is a test. If you wish to play a fully functional game with final graphics, animation, quests, deep combat and rich character progression, please wait until live launch of the game. Everything you are seeing in this test is likely a placeholder. But, if you do have the guts, patience & passion to help build and test this game from the ground up, become an AlphaKnight.

 

TEST RESULTS

World Exploration & Loading into the game

This was the #1 success of the test. I honestly thought the files would be too big and make it impossible for anyone to load into the game. While there are dozens of horrific bugs we found, all of those can be fixed -- this was the only one that could not be. So I am extremely excited to say that this part of the test was a 100% PASS!

Monsters, Primitive Combat, Item Drops, & Respawn

We scattered monsters around the map with item drops. Players rushed into find and fight them all. The monsters were designed so if they "broke" it would produce an error, but not bring the game server crashing down around it. Pretty much all of the monsters broke! But the game kept running which was pretty impressive. Unfortunately, when a monster broke he stopped attacking or chasing you. So the super challenging dungeon with a crazy hard boss monster was a piece of cake for our AlphaKnights. Rock BalBoulder says, "LOOKING FORWARD TO REMATCH HUMMANS!" Items drops worked perfectly, and monsters respawned properly.

While weapons and items are slowly disintigrating and will crumble to dust before the next major test... they were really fun for the players (and the the team) to fight for!

100 PLAYERS PER AREA TEST

We started the game with 10 people per area. Simliar to AQWorlds, if more than 10 people are in an area, it creates a new copy of the room for the next 10 people. We wanted to see what happened when 100 people joined the room! This test went... LOL.... comically. Having that many players in the room did two things. It spiked the RAM usage of players who were actually able to log in to about 3.1 Gigabytes. But that was nothing compared to what happened when the server tried to keep up with sending every action of 100 people to each of the other 99 peopl ein the room. The server message backup got to about 500,000 messages waiting to be sent... and a lag of about 1 minute per action. But this is exactly why we were doing the test, and the findings were good. Minimal has plans to combine and compact these messages.

50 PLAYERS PER AREA TEST

This test went much better. Simliar results with the lag (and same solution), but it was playable if you computer could handle the memory requirements. Minimal and Zhoom believe we can reduce the RAM usage with some clever texture tricks. So, it looks like 20 and 40 man raids are really going to happen! Building this from scratch has been a really exciting challange. Hard to believe we never touched a 3D model before this project started. Look how far it is coming!

BUGS!

 

 "Blue Screen" Bug

This was the most common graphical bug and will be fixed quickly. It is caused by a glitch in our camera controller. This happened because something caused your camera to zoom out to infinity... you are looking at the spacious endless void of Unity. I am impressed at what a pretty color the void is made of.

"Pink Screen" Bug

This is the worst of the graphics related bugs. If you saw something like this, it likely means your graphics card is old or your drivers are out of date. Any video card created after 2005 should work -- but this test debunked that belief pretty hard. A lot of players experienced this. The pink area represents places where shaders could not be displayed by your video card.  A "Shader" is written in a programming language that 3D cards read. They determine how things look. For example, if you look at the grass and leaves in AdventureQuest 3D, you will notice that they appear to sway in the wind and that light effects them differently than stone. This is all because of the shaders that were coded for them. I am going to talk to Minimal, Zhoom and Swolicus about making it possible to turn off the shaders for those of you having this problem. It will make the game look pretty terrible compared to people who have the shaders turned on... but vastly better than a screen of pink!!! (Beleen says, "What is wrong with pink?")

Quick Sand & Flickering

If only this were a feature. Some monsters fell into the world or did a wierd flickering thing. This was caused my the monster moving to a location where it colided with itself producing unusual results. Should be a reasonably easy fix.

Unity Crashing & "Server Execution Failed"

There were a lot of other Unity Crash bugs reported in the Bug Tracker System that we are investigating. When we restarted the servers, players attempting to log on were met with a lot of odd errors. We will be adding checks so that if the game is not online it tells you instead ot just hurling scary error messages at your screen. Although, the screen where we hurl Zorbak at your screen was sorta funny.
 

Walking through walls and areas

These bugs are very low on our priority list. A lot of players figured out they could climb up the trees -- that was really fun. The current maps are small ones for testing only. We will be focusing on these type bugs after the major onesare solved and we start releasing "LIVE GAME" ready maps.

To everyone who helped in this test, thank you! The maximum # of AlphaPoints you can earn is currently 450. If you have 450 Alpha Points, congratulations, you are at the cap! The next test will be worth more points. If you are new, then good news.. there will be opportunities to earn A LOT more Alpha Points in coming tests. Players had a lot of good ideas for what the points could be used for. Some said use it like currency to buy permanent Alpha Items. Some said use it like experience to have an Alpha Level. Looking forward to figuring out what we will use them for later.

UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who helped (and tried helping) to test. We collected a log of error data and will be working hard to make the game playable by everyone... solving the pink screen, blue screen, and lag issues. One thing everyone is agreeing on... this test was a huge success and this game has incredible potential!

Server Shutdown with an epic countdown to "BATTLE ON!"

We did not crash the server, but we spiked lag so hard chat & combat actions were delayed over a minute! On a positive note, 50 players held up better on screen. This was an important part of tonight's test. See, thwn 50 people are in the room... you need to send what is happening to all 50 players. So if you swing a sword, all 50 players need to know you are swinging your sword. Imagine in your head, all 50 of those people broadcasting everything their do to each of the other 50 people continiously. As I write this there are over 500,000 messages jammed up on the server. We can solve this -- it is a pretty challenging and fun project. We are going to restart the server at 10 people per room, then leave the ALPHA TEST up until 9pm EST.

100 people per room was WAAAAAAY too much. (using 3.0GB+ of RAM) Dropping it down to 50. Server restarting.

Large number of repeating errors - REPORT BUGS!

  • "INVALID INPUTS" - Your username or pass has characters in it that are not allowed. Please report a bug so we can change our login to allow your name. (like a "-" )
  • Blue Screen Bug - we are still working on this one
  • Unity Crash - Probably related to the former bug.
  • Laggy - There are two types of lag. Graphics lag and server lag. When reporting bugs, make sure you explain which type it is.

 

6:01pm 480 players online in the first minute.
6:00pm AdventureQuest 3D: Legend of LORE Alpha Test .001 is LIVE! AlphaKnights, report in... it is time for you to get to work!
5:47pm WE HAVE A FIX!!!! Preparing for Alpha Test launch.  Upl;oading new engine to CDN. Estimated time to distribute... 15 minutes.
5:30pm If you have never been part of an Alpha Test before -- you are experiencing it right now. It takes an unusualy large amount of patience and guts. Still have what it takes? The problem escalated, and we are experiencing what is being called "The Blue Screen Bug" and the "Blue Flame Bug" which is likely resulting from something failing to load off the CDN or something in the game loader itself that is failing. The game is failing to load. Due to the severity of this bug we need to give the team time to fix it. We still intend on testing tonight! Check back at 6pm for a detailed update.
5:00pm Well, there is an issue with the CDN that results in a 90% chance you will blue flame and crash on your first load. But the second load seems to work fine. What do you say we just launch and see what happens? (Minimal and Zhoom are looking at the code and seeing if it is somethign we can fix in 20 minutes. If not -- we will just launch and you will know your duty is to survive the first crash and relog in! GO ALPHA!)
4:50pm Everything appears to be working... the team is doing a final walkthrough, then after addressing any issues, we will begin ALPHA TEST .002!
4:30pm We are still waiting on our files to spread around the internet. As soon as everything is loading we will flip the switch and that gray button will turn red! Your mission: Is just to run around and fight stuff. Try to make it to level 2. If you are really ambitious... get some friends and try to go through the cave. The sneakily hidden monster at the end is incredibly powerful now has the Blinding Light of Destiny, and at least 2 other epic looking pieces of gear.
4:00pm We are almost ready for the AQ3D:Legend of LORE alpha test to begin. The CDN is taking a while to update, so the launch window is somewhere between 4:30pm and 5:30pm. I will be updating you every 15ish minutes on our progress!
3:30pm Awesome! We are almost set, so Zhoom is moving the files to the CDN. Huh? What is a CDN!? Glad you asked! CDN stands for "Content Delivery Network." Instead of pulling the gigantic 3D files from our servers (which as you may recall, resulted in the entire game network crashing during our LAST test) we place the files on servers scattered across the internet, all over the world. Whenever you go to load the game, it will download the files from a server near you. This means it will be faster for you (and less crashy for us.) That being said, the files are still huge and the limits of your patience and santity will be tested like some cruel cthulian study conducted by H.P. Lovecraft and GlaDOS.
3:15pm Woah, apparently we actually do have an Artix Entertainment board on Pintrest! For the record, I am dissapointed in how quickly they patched this bug. We should demand Alpha Gansta Hat Style back in as a feature.
3:00pm About 1 hour and 30 minutes until showtime... on schedule the shower of never ending horrific bugs have begun to pour in. On an unrelated topic, we are turning a helm related bug to a new "feature" direction for the fashion industry. We call it "Alpha Gansta Hat Style" -- we are sure it will catch on and become huge at Macy's, Hot Topic and all of the major MMOs will be doing it by 2014. If you are bored out of your mind waiting, take pictures of yourself wearing your favorite real life head gear Alpha Gansta Hat Style... Beleen! Get your Pintrest board ready!

2:15pm The team grouped up and entered the cave with the intent of slaying Rocky BaBoulder... we hope you have better luck than we did! Meanwhile, Minimal added support for the "TAB" key. You can now target nearby enemies with the tab key. Xero updated the skeleton with new art. All of the item drops for this test have been added to the monsters and.. OMG! I forgot to add the descriptions *runs off*
2:00pm A lot of people ask, "What is Alpha Testing Like?" It is not like testing a mostly completed game. It is a lot more like this video of Cysero, Samba and I loading in without hair and shooting magical particles from our nether regions and then singing about it.
12:45pm Johnny G, frmo the TV show "Hulk Hogans Micro Championship Wrestling" stopped by the lab yesterday. He was at the Arnold Classic 2013 and brought us a bunch of T-shirts. As you can see, we have a few left if you want to stop by and claim yours. The Micro Championship Wrestling crew will be putting on shows at the upcoming convention MegaCon in Orlando, FL in two weeks. They will have a ring setup right in the hall! I jokingly asked if I could Wrestle, or manage one of his Wrestlers. Johnny said sure. OMG! Someone get Chairman Platinum to show up!!!!!
12:30pm We are going to be doing TWO major tests tonight. The first test will allow 10 people in each town. The second test will put... 100 people in each town. Because how are we going to do "100 Man Raids" without 100 people in the map?
12:00pm So, Bay Area News 9 suddenly appeared in our building. We honestly do not know why. They are taking the elevator to us in a little bit... O_O. Meanwhile, items are being added to monsters. You will initially log in without a weapon, so the first thing you should do is click on the "Alpha Shop" and get the DragonFable sword for 0 gold. For the record, our rock monster, Rocky... HITS HARD! His bigger, tougher, brother, lives in the back of the cave and is rumored to have the Blinding Light of Destiny. (Albiet, it is slowly disintigrating and will crumble to dust just before the next major test release.)

Dage's Birthday

It is finally time! On Friday, the long awaited and highly anticipated "Dage's Birthday Shop" will open with the most wicked looking items in AdventureQuest Worlds. Ever since Dage joined us as an game artist, he has been continually improving his skills. Not just in drawing, flash but also in painting and creating armor in real life. He has a deep passion for what he does -- and it should not surprise any of you who follow him on  his @DageTheEvil Twitter that he works late through the nights and on the weekends to make sure the art he creates for the game tops the previous thing he created. I do not think the few of you who comment on his sneak peak picture postings have any idea how much it means to him and inspires him. To celebrate his real life birthday a bunch of us from the lab are taking him to play paintball. Dage and Faith made special cosplay armor to battle in! 

The new Town of Battleon: Next Week!

How do you "re-do" something that we are used to seeing for the past 4 years!? Easy. You DO NOT "re-do" it!!! Nope, you "upgrade" it! Make it better, not different is the motto for the huge upgraded town of Battleon coming to AdventureQuest Worlds NEXT week. J6 has been redrawing the town and it looks... AWESOME! We were very careful not to change the very first scene. Well, other than to give it a better view of the larger town now featuring a library, weapon shop, battle collisium, flight roust, player housing, and more. The artwork was only part one, each week, alongside our normal releases, we will be adding new quests, shops , challenges and even reputation/classes to each shop. The beginning of the game will be filled with so much more for both new and older players to do.

BONUS SECRETS

AdventureQuest 3D is making good progress. Draven is building our new, new new (I think we rebuilt it three times now) interface. He will be showing it to Yergen and I in about 30 minutes. Because of the extra week, our Xero & Thyton had time to resize and re-texture a bunch of the old helms, shoulders and weapons into the new style. We are going to add as many as possible. I will post some pretty pictures of 3D thingies for you tomorrow :-)

"Good things come to those who wait."

We have a show stopping bug which is crashing the AdventureQuest 3D server. It is going to take a few days to fix it, so we need to postpone the stress test until NEXT week on Wednesday, March 6th. Thank you for being so patient and awesome about this. It does not make sense to test something we already know is going to crash. This will also give us time to do a bunch of other fixes before everyone sees this --and add a few more temporary item drops to the monsters for you to find and show off.
