How to write Design Notes 101

Posted by on 139 comments

The hardest part of writing a design notes is writing the first few words. So I asked you and my other friends on Twitter to give me a hand...

  • "A Short time ago, in a galaxy exactly here...." - @Dashing_Knight
  • "random shoutout to Slinky!" - @SlinkyAE
  • "It was a daarrrrrk and storrrrmy niiiight" - @Aeonarial
  • "I've just slain another undead army wearing underpants and using a toothpick!" - @ViddyFoxy
  • "Cheeki Breeki" - @Green_Leaper
  • "Milk!" - @CoffeeAQW
  • "Fluffy bunnies" @Cisco_HS
  • "This week, lemons will be added in to aqw!" - @lord_mianite_aq
  • "Server hampsters diet includes;" - @Zoshi_AE
  • "Artix please answer my question1" - @Mo345_AE
  • "I scream for ice cream!" - @TheRamzor
  • "Okay so for this week our targeted windows are..." - @BobbYow_

"Ladies and Gentle Men and Moglins I now Present to you etc...." - @Draeceroth

It seems like it would be easier... especially considering that for 9 years I started every day writing a design notes post about what the team and I were working on. Occassionally, a design notes posts would unexpectantly go viral. This was the case when we were building DragonFable and I made a rap spoof of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force theme song. 4chan and the Something Aweful forums lit up with comments like "OMG! This game creator just publically lost his mind!" Those of you who read the design notes always knew secrets and had a deeper insight into what was going to come. We also built things together-- which was the most special and unique thing about AE and players like you.

"This one time while i was at band camp" -@RockLeaAQW

Which is why, of course, the best, my favorite Design Notes memories was from AdventureQuest 3D. We broke all of the rules. It was just a black page full of daily updated randomness. We first posted about the USB powered super computer couch-- and posted diagrams and pictures. We posted "found footage" of EbilCorp breaking into the lab and started a really over the top youtube video storyline. Between you guys and the team, it was a truly amazing inside joke we shared. Although... shockingly, some folks believed those crazy videos were real. Meanwhlie, we were creating 3D art, animation and designing a world. Every time we made a post we would read your feedback and make changes and revise our plans. You could just feel the creative engergy. Everything seemed on the right path... then, literally overnight, it happened. AQ3D came to a screeching halt. It broke my heart when the project abruptly fell apart. It was a disaster. You can read the painful details of what happened in any number of older posts. But if you are a long time player of our games, you probably noticed something equally disturbing... I stopped writing Design Notes posts.

"Next time on Dragonhall AE" - @JudgeAcumen

I titled this post: "How to Write Design Notes 101" for a darn good reason. There is a single, secret truth to writing design notes. But it is not a "how" it is a "why".... and the reason WHY is because when you wake up in the morning, and you are so bursting with excitement about whatever you are working on that you will litterally explode if you do not tell people. It is a compulsion. Like an itch that you can never scratch.... or if you do scratch it, it just gets itchier. SO ITCHY!!!!!! AND NO ITCH CREAM CAN HELP!!! Every morning, I would write the design notes in my mind, while standing in the shower... I could not wait to get to the lab, boot up my computer and start typing it in. Your comments, messages and posts would fuel my creativity and passion... even if you were literally the only one to make a comment. (This would often drive the team crazy because they all know I listen to you more than any of them.) From video games to toys, music, art and videos-- I live and breath for the excitement of our high paced, real-time creative cycle. So "how to Write a Design Notes?"... easy. Do what you love and allow yourself, and others, to fall deeper in love with it the more you work on it.

"just say what come the first in your mind artix and tell us what goes to happen coz u r great in writing design notes .Xoxo me" - @RelaxBleu

It is obvious to anyone that I love our games. So... why did I stop writing design notes? Honest answer-- I still, to this day, feel unbelievably terrible about AdventureQuest 3D. I feel terrible because, everyone worked so hard on it, everyone was so excited for it-- but it just did not happen. I feel terrible, because there is no way for us to just pick up from where we left off. Really, there is not. Everything would need to be redone from scratch now and we do not have the money, the number of team members, nor the talent to build a game of that scope correctly... and we shot down any suggestions to do it half-arsed. Like a heavy iron chain and shackles, the ghost of that project has kept me trapped in place. If I have never apologized about what happened with the AdventureQuest 3D project before... then please... sincerely... from my heart...

I AM SORRY....

You might be thinking "You are apologizing for something we all got over a year and ago?" To which the answer is Yes x 9,999. It has been haunting me... and this is one type of undead that only you can slay. Every time I go to make a post it is the thing that stops me. Our game plans and projects have changed and shifted a lot in the past year. Like we have been caught in some sort of ground hogs day where everything we want to build is infeasable. Technology and games are changing fast... and I feel like we are trapped. New indie game makers are experimenting with new game concepts and buliding fun projects. WE should be buliding fun new experimental things together.... right? As we speak, Major game studios are releasing 2D games that look terrible. Our 2D art is amazing-- so why are we not competiting against them with our artists and animators current skill? If we are really going to accomplish all of our goals and dreams, we need to start doing the the things we are good at-- and we should keep improving until we are the best in the world at it! I want to unlock the shackles and get back to making and getting excited about making awesome games. AQ3D is still a goal for the future. Just not the immediate future. You probably already know that the very reason I wrote this to you is because I cannot personally do this without you.... your enthusiasm, your encouraging words, and your eagerness to help build crazy game projects with me whether they contain the term "3D" or not.

I am very eager to announce the new things we have started working on and get you involved in them. There are two perticuarly big projects involving the pictures I have been posting to Facebook and Twitter. Of course, a lot of this depends if enough people have the same itch I do after reading this. Also... having not posted in so long has left me with an enourmous pile of untold stories and adventures-- some embarrasing. Some REALLY embarrassing. I know you can never go back to the 'good old days'... but as sure as the sun rises in the morning, we can create all new 'GOOD NEW DAYS!'

It is a good day for adventure.

Bree
Bree: This is just a suggestion for AQ3D you could do two things... the first one being is to make it a player based project so you'd have players creating the game (but players with the skill would be highly unlikely) and you've also mentioned money is an issue. What you could do for this is start a kickstarter campaign to raise money (try to calculate how much money would be needed to pay for the project or whatever you wish to call it) and to encourage people to donate you could do a AQW or other AE game promo or give them a AQ3D benifit (such as 200 Alpha Points? Ahh the good old currency)

Megalus Doomslayer: I'm disappointed I didn't think of a Kickstarter project, myself. The rewards could be based on how much the project raises overall. The higher the milestone, the more Heromart merchandise is raffled off or the more premium currency everyone who donated would receive either in AQ3D or the other AE games.

The Extraordinary Mr. E
The Extraordinary Mr. E: Artix, I have been with Artix Entertainment going on 10 years now. AQ, DF, MQ, AQW, ED, HS, OS, I have seen the peaks and valleys of the studio and it's games. Don't beat yourself up so much over AQ3D's failure. Our failures define us just as much as our accomplishments. AQ3D's failure was just a stepping stone going forward, a reminder to do and become greater. I always look forward to whatever AE has cooking, even if they don't turn out successful or "click" with me as much as I'd want them to. But we're on this roller-coaster ride together, and I'm with you to the end.

Mister Maximum: Artix no apology is necessary, we all wanted AQ3D to happen, but sometimes things just don't work out and there is nothing anyone can do about it. You have given us so many great games over the years, I want you to know just how much I (and I think most of us) truly appreciate it. When AQ3D didn't pan out we stuck with you and no matter what happens we will continue to stay with you because we love the games you make and I like to think the bond between the players and you is a unique and strong one most game developers simply can't claim to have. You aren't alone in this and I know whatever obstacles are met we will all face them together, and when things turn out we will all rejoice together. I've been a loyal fan and player for years now, and I don't intend to change that any time soon. Battle on!

Personally, I will only be annoyed if you give up fully on games like OS or HS, which WERE made while failing are not dead and have a slight community. You suceeded in making those games, don't let THEM down. Fight for them. Promote them. Don't let them go down like AQ3D, ahnd I can forgive you easy enough because you are awesome (;

BloodWynne: Artix, no apology is necessary or even wanted. We've stuck by you for over a decade, we'll continue to for as long as you make games. I have never seen a game company that has the passion for making games that AE has before, and that all starts with you! Sometimes plans don't work out like you want them to. In that case, you do what you've done. Make something new that's totally amazing, BattleGems! And even with AQ3D being shelved for the moment, look how much the team learned while working on it. You'll find a place to put all that to good use, I'm quite certain. So Keep Calm and BATTLE ON!

You've always been a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration for many of us. YOU ,sir, are a true HERO! Never let a single failure hold you down to the ground. You have always made a strong come back and I believe you'll do it once more. Remember, “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail.” - Confucious. Almost a decade with you guys and I still can't get enough. You want to build new games? - Yes, lets do it! You want a helping hand? - Here, you can have mine #StrethcesOutArm. You want us to build it together? - Sure, why not! And while we're at it, let us make some good memories together till the day it comes for "AQ3D" to be reality! I wondered if you'd just gotten busier or something, and so y'pulled Beleen or Alina into doing 'em, but I didn't think you were this crushed about AQ3D being unable to continue. ...long story short though, have a hug, Artix. Menirz: Artix, you need to stop beating yourself up over this. Sure, when I heard about how AQW members would get special access to the alpha knight testing of AQ3D I spent hours doing AExtras to get a summer of membership - only to have the access delayed. I didn't care - I trusted you, your team, and your track records that however the future went it would be one I would enjoy. But most importantly, I was able to understand the reasons why it had to be pushed back because your design notes explained it. I don't play your games as often as I'd like (school and whatnot) but I make a point of always skimming the design notes each week, not only to know if I need to make time to play the release, but because you guys are like a videogame making extension of my family. I care about how you guys are doing. AQ3D is still a success artix - even if it will be a memory only us alpha knights will be able to cherish. So please, don't let it weigh you down, instead look at all it taught you and all the experience your team gained - then invest it in your next levels dive into your new projects.

Menirz: Oh, one other random thought, now that you have your mobile development licenses, you should make a design notes app - it could save your artix login and provide easy mobile optimized access to all games design notes. Or maybe just a mobile version of the websites. Ideas to keep in mind in case any of your devs get bored ;)
Fuzzyink
Fuzzyink: I couldnt get over it easily and I cant imagine how it must be to the team. Everything follows its own timeline. Perhaps the story of Legend of Lore depends on the events of another storyline of an AE game that is yet to be composed :DD Anyway, just keep writing to us Artix.

Fife M: In the beginning of DragonFable it was once said, "One of the big themes of DragonFable is 'Not giving up'... because no matter what we are attempting in life, we cannot fail unless we give up." You said that yourself Artix, remember? I understand the disappointments you have faced. It MUST have been hard. Very hard. I know that, but I think you forgot that we need you too. I saw how your posts seemed to slip off the face of Lore, and I was confused. I figured that you had forgotten, and it's my turn to apologize- I am sorry for doubting. Never has there been a more considerate, more devoted, and more wonderful game creator. You were the one who created this charming community, puns and all. Who else would turn down- oh what was it again- 8 million dollars or something to chase their goal, their desire despite incredible, in(Sir Mountable), odds? This post, your post, it demonstrates the thing that allows us to keep going- YOU CARE. And we care. Keep your spark- lose your hope, lose your joy, lose that spark- you lose yourself. If you ever need help you can rely on us. If necessary, take it slow for a bit. Not everything has to happen NOW. Some things have to have a little time spent waiting before they are discovered. Never forget the meaning behind the motto so many have taken to heart- "BATTLE ON"

Megalus Doomslayer: Considering it fell apart, at least in part, because of Adobe's failure with their flash project, it's hard to place any blame on anyone at AE for another company's failed project. It was a domino effect you couldn't counteract. You were blind sided. On the upside, you got a 3D printer in the midst of it. Just print more Roliths, Cyseros, and Dages.

luna soulfire: I too am sorry AQ3D was scrapped. It truly blows. But perhaps out of it's ashes, and even better game will come of it. Chin Up Paladin.

TheOriginalFive: Artix, if you see this, you can pick up and continue again. We don't blame you for AQ3D never getting off the ground. You can still pick up the games that have been left to rot over the last few years and spruce them up, even if certain parties have given up on them. You can set a shining example by going back and refreshing your old ideas. It's a waste to let the potential of superheroes (HS) or a lost soul reclaiming itself (OS) die off just because it's not considered as profitable as shoehorning celebrities into a medieval fantasy.

Runester333
Runester333: When Benjamin Franklin invented the lightbulb, it was not an instant success, it took him over 100 tries before he finally made a working design. When asked about it later he said that he had not failed 100 times, he had found 100 ways to not make a lightbulb. AE may make a working 3D game, or they may not, but what matters it that the process brought the team and the community closer together.
The fact of the matter is, I have been a fan of AE games for years and I continue to log on every week because I am constantly amazed by the things that you accomplish, and I am not the only one. I truely believe that AE is the most inpired, and most inspiring, company in the gaming industry. The mythos that you have created is woven with the ideas of players from all around the world and has taken on a meaning far beyond what I imagine even its creators had originally envisioned, it has brought together the ideas of countless people to form a universe of endless creative wonder.
I know it is always tempting to look to future, and always hard to ignore the demons of the past but you should take the time to reflect on the incredible things that you have already done. AE has accomplished so much, and has so much more to do, with so much going on it is inevitable that not everything will be successful, but knowing the mindblowing skill that comprises AE I am sure that everything that is successful will be truely spectacular!

Zion
Zion: I think it would be great if the Alpha points just rolled over to the next project. I think you could show player loyalty and rally your dedicated alpha testers for future projects. You could tie it in to our master accounts. As we tally up (global) alpha points we can gain entry to alpha tests or even pre-alpha concept testing. This way, nobody has to feel bad about any particular project. Everyone would simply be helping in strengthening AE.

RavenRose: Oooh, Artiiiix. /hugs You have no idea what these games mean to me. I've been playing for the past six or seven years but only got into the community a year or so ago. But I've found that this is the best game community ever. I love reading crazy, funny and occasionally serious DNs from you guys! One failed idea doesn't define you. And I soo can't wait to help out with any project I can. P.S. You're welcome.

Raine: It's okay even if AQ3D was cancelled. Maybe there's something a lot better coming in your way.. Who knows you can build maybe an Assassin's Creed-like game. IN BROWSER. I know, it seems impossible, but hey, you've done impossible things many times already. Just look at it.

Raine: And hey, if you ever feel to compete against major game studios' 2D browser games, please don't go down to their level. Because your games are unique. Not a clone of something. It's fun. Not grinding and autopath and stuff. And, heck, your artists' love for art was so powerful, it radiates on their art itself. I mean, play another game with awesome graphics. And buy the most awesome armor. You'll think, "Meh, awesome eye candy." But in AQW, you're proud of it. Of their awesome art condensed, compressed, and put into a form of a sideways character with an arm and a leg in shadows. :D
grayfoxrunning
grayfoxrunning: Artix, Like I have said before,"I am 74 years old and I take care of my shut in wife so that makes be a shut in also. I love your games and your crew and did you know that I have spent hours upon hours playing AQ, WF, Dragon fable( A little)and I played AQ3D as a test Knight. You will never fail us my friend. The only failure would be to abandon "US" and walk away. Take that second breath and move ahead, always. Battle on.

DeepShift: Anyhoo, never really posted before, but just wanted to say that whatever you do, all of us are behind you to the fullest extent. We believe in you and the team, and even if some of your projects don't work out as initially intended, it doesn't matter, because we know that you'll keep on working to make amazing games. You guys are without a doubt the best and most REAL team of people I know of, and I'm proud to call myself one of your gamers. Get back in there Artix, we're with ya.

DeepShift: Anyway, I haven't really ever posted on one of these, but I wanted to say that no matter what, we're all behind you. Sure, some projects don't work out as intended, but that doesn't matter, because we know that you guys are going to keep working to make something amazing. How do we know that? Because you are all, undoubtedly, the BEST and most REAl team out there. You interact with your fanbase on a personal level, it's incredible. I'm proud to call myself an AE gamer, and look forward to whatever next thing you bring out for us. Keep on rockin'. (And if this ends up a double post of some kind, please delete the prevous xD)
