In the world of indie gaming, few origin stories hit quite like the rise of Dage the Evil.
Starting as just another passionate — aka obsessive… the healthy kind… probably — fan of the browser-based Flash MMO AdventureQuest Worlds, Dage turned his love for video games into a legendary career, becoming one of the most iconic artists in Artix Entertainment history.

Most gamers (myself included) dream of making the leap from player to professional game dev. But few (myself excluded lol) actually pull it off. Dage the Evil is one of the rare ones who did pull it off, and in doing so, he didn’t just land a job… he built an entire legacy that’s lasted over 15 years and counting!!
Dage the Evil is a defining force behind some of Artix’s biggest games, including AQWorlds, AdventureQuest 3D, and the upcoming AdventureQuest Worlds: Infinity.

But long before he wielded a Wacom, Dage was just another player who loved an online game. The difference was how he turned that obsession into a literal lifelong career!
For anyone who dreams of working in the gaming industry, Dage's story is proof that with enough passion, persistence, and prowess, your video game goals are absolutely possible.
And he started exactly where you are today.
Dage’s story started like many of us: getting hooked on a game that borders on addiction. No judgement, we’ve all been there… and are maybe still there 😜
But unlike most players, Dage didn’t stop dreaming. Instead, he started creating fanart (see above!) on the old-school Battleon Forums, back before posting images on Twitter was even a thing! Getting noticed on the forums was no small feat, but Dage’s talent was impossible to ignore. His artwork quickly caught the attention of game devs and fellow gamers alike.
Dage’s art was good, sure, but it was also dark, dangerous, and dripping with a style that felt like it belonged in a Mature rendition of AQWorlds.
“Maybe because I grew up playing games with the Lich King from Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft, and played a necromancer on Diablo 2 when I was a kid,” Dage the Evil recounts, regarding his influential artistic inspirations. “Def got me fired up to conquer as much as I could with art and become the Lich King myself lol.”
Mission accomplished, my man!
Within a year, Dage’s fanart earned him a shot at designing items for the game’s official Player Suggestion Shop. And that was only the beginning.
Dage’s first big break came when he apprenticed under Nulgath, the lead AQW animator + artist formally known as Miltonius. Where my OGs at who remember getting hopelessly lost in Tercessuinotlim? 👋
Nulgath is undoubtedly a fan-favorite designer with his own devoted following… but as Dage honed his skills, he didn’t copy his mentor… but rather, leveled up his own signature style that captured the imagination of a hundred million heroes.
We’re talking a deviously delectable mix of brooding darkness, glowing blue hues, and bone-chilling armor sets forged from discipline, vision, and the confidence to push past boundaries.

Eventually, friendly competition between the two artists sparked a rivalry within the gaming community. Fans would debate fiercely over whose designs reigned supreme, but behind the scenes, there was a deep mutual respect between mentor and student.
Working with Nulgath — or any expert in any field — is like learning from a master blacksmith. You don’t just copy… you refine, you experiment, you fail, and you come back sharper every time.
And sharpened Dage was… as were his weapon designs >:D

Through trials, tribulations, and tons of triumphs too, Dage kept pushing himself to grow, honing both his art-style and world-building skills. His creations weren't just cosmetics; they were pieces that told a story and whispered secrets, evolving into something unmistakably Dage…

... unmistakably something different…

… a certain something players didn’t just equip…

… but rather...

... identify with.
Dage never played it safe. And given real power — both in-game and IRL — he built up an empire.
He developed the aesthetic of the “Undead Legion,” a dark, brutal faction defined by intricate armor, wicked weapons, and his signature black-and-blue color scheme. Suddenly, being part of the Legion wasn’t just a gameplay choice… it was a statement.

“I always dreamed of how awesome it would be to have my own army of the undead to command. I ended up making it somewhat of a reality.”
“Somewhat” Dage says? 👀 Sir, you have a literal army of loyal followers in matching armor. That is not “somewhat.” That is… a movement!
One of Dage’s most iconic creations, the Dark Caster, remains a fan favorite to this day, with tens of thousands of players still pledging allegiance to the Legion for a shot at its forbidden power… or just seriously good looks.
But Dage’s story is more than just dope art drops; it’s about rivalry, ambition, and staking your claim.
Every hero needs a nemesis, and for Dage, it was his former master Nulgath, the Archfiend of twisted fiends and infernal contracts.
What started as mentorship turned into full-blown rivalry, with players picking sides and fueling debates about whose creations reigned supreme.
Should one side with Dage’s frigid ferocity in the Undead Legion, or Nulgath’s diabolical chaos in The Nation? A legit Red vs Blue debate unfolded across browsers worldwide, now spanning on Steam and mobile devices in AQ3D, and soon, AQWorlds: Infinity.

Behind the scenes, the competition was real — but so was the respect. Both artists pushed each other to new heights, helping define the golden age of gaming while setting a standard for fan-driven creativity across the industry.
Because when you surround yourself with people who challenge you, not only do you level up ~but~ you also unlock greatness you never knew you had.
Remember: iron sharpens iron, ambition fuels ambition, and legends are forged in the fires of friendly rivalry. Diamonds develop under pressure — never forget that!
Today, Dage the Evil’s influence stretches far beyond a single game. Seeing black-and-blue anything makes our brains instantly scream “Undead Legion!” and we honestly have 0 complaints about that.
Every new item and every new armor set forged by Dage feels like a collectible piece of gaming history. Dage’s work is an intrinsic part of the worlds we get to explore every day and have been exploring for 15+ years. And will continue to do so far into the future.
And you know what? I bet Dage still feels like that kid from the forums sometimes. The difference is now he gets to help build the worlds he used to escape into… and help others chase that same dream too!

And that’s the real takeaway, heroes.. Not just “wow cool armor bro,” but that following your dreams is absolutely possible ~and~ achievable.
You never need permission to start.
And you don’t need a perfect plan either.
You just need to show up. Every day. And every knight 😜
Because who knows… the fanart you post today might become tomorrow’s career.
